By burning the Chimney Cleaning Log in your fireplace or woodstove you can treat and reduce creosote build up in your chimney, reduce volatile content and help to prevent chimney fires.

How does the Chimney Cleaning Log Works?

The Cleaning Log burns for about 90 minutes. It is best to always make a wood fire prior to using it as it will heat the tar on your chimney wall while it improves your draught.

The Smoke from the Cleaning log is charged with additives which rise and attach themselves to the creosote deposits.

These creosote deposits are either reduced or rendered less likely to result in a chimney fire thus ensuring your home is safe.

While burning fires over the next week or two the Cleaning Log additives which are attached to the creosote will continue to treat your chimney. Some of creosote may fall back into your fireplace, smoke shelf or woodstove.

Using Chimney Cleaning Log in Woodstoves

Woodstoves produce high levels of creosote inside the flue pipes. Burning the cleaning log will reduce overall creosote weight and thickness and volatile organic compounds.

Weekend use only: Use 1 Chimney Cleaning Log per winter season (use at the start or middle of season)

1 Fire per day: Use 2 Chimney Cleaning Logs per winter season (one at start of season and one in the middle)

Continuous Fires: Burn 1 log every two months

Using the Chimney Cleaning Log in Fireplaces

Whilst fireplaces produce less creosote that wood stoves they are harder to clean.

Due to a high air flow draught open fireplaces produce less creosote that a woodstove but it still needs attention over time.

Small Fireplaces / Small Flue: Burn the Cleaning log as a precaution every 60 fires

Large Firelplace /  Large Flue: To render creosote brittle and aid mechanical cleaning in case of heavy creosote build up burn 2 Chimney Cleaning Logs together every 60 fires.

How to use the Chimney Cleaning Log

The Chimney Cleaning log may be used alone. For maximum efficiency when burning one place it on hot embers from a previous fire. For large fireplaces burn two units at the same time but do not place the two on hot embers.

Follow the below steps

1: Perform a visual inspection of your chimney and flue prior to using the Chimney Cleaning Log to ensure it is free of debris, bird's nests or any other obstructions.

2: If burning only one log, remove it from box and place it on hot embers from a previous fire. If it does not light automatically use a match and light it on both sides of the the paper cover. If burning two (large fireplaces) do not place on hot embers. Instead light the wrappers on both with a match. For woodstoves or fireplaces with doors always keep the doors closed.

3: The Cleaning Log will burn for about 90 minutes and will then smoke for several hours. Let the log burn out completely. Leave any remains of the Log in your fireplace or woodstove. The additives in the remains will continue to be released and reduced to ashes during the next fire.

4: The Chimney Cleaning Log treatment will continue for the next week or 2. Creosote may begin to fall onto your smoke shelf or firebox. Inspect your chimney, clean the smoke shelf, flue elbow and other obstacles of fallen debris after the Log treatment. The smoke shelf when full of debris can be cleaned with a wet/dry vacuum and/or a hand brush.

After burning the log it is recommended to continue to have wood fires for at least one week. This will allow the additives released by the Log to penetrate further into the creosote.

The Chimney Cleaning Log does not take the place of inspection and professional cleaning. It is still recommended that your chimney gets a professional clean every winter season or as is required.
