How to bleed a radiator?

If the problem is with all radiator heater as opposed to one radiator it probably is best to call a plunber or central heating engineer.

If the problem is with just one radiator turn the radiator valve taps fully anticlockwise.

If radiator still is not getting hot properly when heating is on you probably need to bleed the radiator.

Before you start you will need your radiator bleed key and a dry cloth. You will also need to wait until your central heating system is completely cold before you commence.

Step 1: For maximum safety it is best to turn the central heating and hot water off.

Step 2: Place the dry cloth under the radiator to catch any water that might come out.

Step 3: Insert Radiator Key into the square bleed screw which is normally located on the to[p or the side of the radiator.

Step 4: Turn radiator key slowly anti-clockwise until you hear a hissing nosie (no more than 2 turns as the screw should not be removed completely)

Step 5: Wait for hissing noise to stop and you start to see small amounts of water coming from the bleed valve.

Step 6: Retighten bleed valve by turning it anti-clockwise ensuring you are careful not to overtighten.

If its a combination boiler check the pressure gauge on the front of the boilier. If it's below the normal serring you will need to add water to your boiler. (check your boiler manual for instructions on this)

Step 7: Turn heating and hot water back on.
