What are Soap Nuts?

Technically soap nuts are more a fruit than a nut which act as an all-natural alternative to laundry detergent. The fruit grows on trees in Asian countries like Nepal and India where they have been used as a washing detergent for thousands of years.

Each soap nut contains naturally occurring saponins. When mixed with water Soap nuts have the power to wash away all dirt, grime and stains whilst remaining gentle on your clothes.

How to Use Soap Nuts for Washing Clothes

1. Using the guide below put the required amount of soap nuts into the small bag which comes with the 1KG pack and tie the bag tightly.

For lightly soiled clothes use 3-5 nuts
For Heavily soiled clothes 4-6 nuts
For hard water areas you should use 7 nuts

(You can add a few drops of essential oils to the bag if you wish to add a nice fragrance to the wash.)

2. Place your clothes  in the washing machine and insert the soap but on top.

3. Close washing machine, set to required washing machine and let the washing cycle commence

4. When the washing cycle has ended  remove clothes from the machine and also remove the bag of soap nuts and allow to dry.

5. The soap nuts can be used several times until cleaning performance begins to fade.

Please note the soap nuts will last longer when you set your washing cycles to cold or warm wash cycles. You will only get one to two washes on them when set to hot cycles.

Elizabeth says:

I’m very happy with the soap nuts. I bought them from this company because it was the best price. They arrived quickly and I’ve been using them about three weeks for all my laundry with great results. I’ll never go back to detergent now! It was my first purchase from this website but I’ll definitely buy from here again

  1. I find the best way to use the soapnuts is to make up a liquid detergent. 1 handful in a litre of water, and boil for 10 mins (or just leave on the stove overnight) It has to be stored in the fridge. I then use this as laundry and dishwashing detergent. I bag of nuts lasts me and my husband for 6 months. Massive savings and eco too 🙂

  2. Hi,
I’m just wondering if I can also use them for making my natural “shampoo” as some of them would be suitable. Thanks.

    1. Yes they can be used to make shampoo. Below are details on how to make Shampoo from Soap Nuts.
      What you need
      5 soap nuts
      3 cups of water
5 drops lavender essential oil (optional)

      Instructions
Place soap nuts in a small muslin bag (comes with produc).

Place in a medium saucepan with 2 cups of the water and bring to a boil.

Reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.

Add 1 cup of water and simmer for 10 more minutes.

Remove from heat and let cool.

Squeeze out the bag until it suds. Rinse with cool water and squeeze in to the pan again.

Store in a glass jar in the fridge until use.

  3. I live in Canada and found your site when looking for a supplier for a friend of mine in Ireland. I’m so glad to see you have soap nuts for sale. I have been using them for around six years for all of my laundry needs. I very seldom need to use a stain remover as these do the trick. As has been mentioned, I put six soap nuts in the muslin bag and place on the top of the load of clothes. I use a front loader machine. When the clothes are ready to move to the dryer, I remove the bag of nuts, dry them, and use the bag three more times. I can tell that they are ‘spent’ because when dried, they are no longer hard, rather they been very ‘squishy’. I no longer use dryer sheets either. I have recommended them to friends who have allergies and those who have small babies whose skin is so very sensitive. They can be made into a liquid dish detergent and hair shampoo by boiling. Hope this helps. Love Lyn

  4. Hi there,

I find these nuts great for washing with and so affordable, but was surprised and disappointed that there was a plastic bag holding the nuts inside the cloth bag. I understand that the small fragments of nuts need to to be contained, but perhaps a paper/plastic free alternative could be used – could this be fed back to the manufacturer please?

    Cheers,
    Anne

    1. Hi Anne,
Glad to hear you like the product and Thank you for your feedback. We will certainly pass it on to the manufacturers. I might be wrong but I would imagine given the nature of the product range Ecozone produce this issue has come up already. My guess is the plastic is possibly unavoidable in this case as product would need water proof packaging. If packaging without plastic got wet in transit it would cause bag to lather up and destroy the stock. If we get a proper reply from Ecozone I will forward it on to you.
